The
BBL Trophy is one of the much-heralded peripheral competitions in
British basketball, and has been running for as long as the BBL with
a fascinating twenty-one year history.
Historically, the competition has been dynastic in nature with teams
recording consecutive BBL Trophy triumphs. The Kingston Kings won
the competition on three consecutive occasions between 1989-92; from
there the Thames Valley Tigers took over and won the next three
between 1992-95; between 1995-97 it was won twice by the London
Towers, who had another success in 2000; most famously of all was
the BiG Storage Cheshire Jets, who were champions for four straight
seasons between 2000-04; and most recently the Newcastle Eagles have
appeared in the last five finals, winning it three times, twice
between 2004-06 and last season 86-79 over the Guildford Heats. With
only ten different winners, it is the piece of silverware that has
been shared around the least.
The BBL Trophy, which incorporates the top 3 EBL Clubs from last
season, now also takes This year’s competitions takes the form of a
straight knockout competition. |
